In their first game after promotion to Division One West, Penzance got off the perfect start edging out St Ives Town in a thrilling local derby on a muggy afternoon at Penlee Park.

Lewis Caspall pounced on a defensive slip to run through and fire the Magpies into an early lead. Then Liam Cregan punished a similar blunder by the Penzance back line, setting up Ross Duncan to round Callum Grant and pull the visitors back to parity. But, by the break, Penzance were ahead again. Rolandos Samnauskas surged clear down the left and centred to Ewan Trevains whose goal-bound shot was helped over the line by Caspall.

Samnauskas was inches away from extending the lead immediately after the restart before St Ives levelled again. Lewis Hitchens chopped down Asa Donaldson and, from the spot, Duncan despatched his fifth goal of the season against Penzance having bagged a hat-trick in the July friendly between the two teams at The Saltings.

The Magpies were not to be denied though, and the took the lead for a third, decisive, time seventeen minutes before the end. Harvey Richings broke clear down the right and set up Samnauskas who created for himself the space to thread home a low left foot shot for the winner.

“It was a great squad performance today, to claim the three points. The attitude was right and game plan was executed,” said Lee Major. His managerial partner Daz Smith added: “I felt we were the better side over the 90 minutes and deserved the win. A couple of lapses in concentration cost us two goals, but thankfully we created some good chances and took them. There were moments where we just seemed a little lacklustre and hesitant, but I think the heat and the pressure of our first game in this division played their part. There were some real positives to take away, and hopefully we can carry the momentum forward.”
