Failure to take their chances when overwhelming on top cost Penzance Reserves dearly as, for a second consecutive season, they lost an opening league game of the season to Newlyn Non-Athletico.
Put through by TJ Price, Kizzy Snowden skimmed a shot just past Zak Freeman’s far post after only five minutes. A breath-taking burst down the left, and cross on the run, by Freddie Neaum handed Snowden another very presentable opening shortly afterwards, but the striker scooped the ball over the bar.
The misses gave Newlyn confidence and hitman Jack Liddicoat punished a sloppy clearance, surprising keeper Ben Reeve with an angled drive just inside his far post when a cross to an unmarked opponent looked odds-on.
The Magpies were flying high again after the turnaround. Left-back Lewis Hitchens was just unable to convert a tantalising cross from the right. A deserved equaliser finally arrived in the 56th minute when, after Tyler Smith had been tripped, Snowden beat Freeman with a penalty to which the keeper got a not-quite-strong-enough hand.
But parity was short-lived. The experienced Louis Vanhinsbergh, a first half substitute, arrived from deep to connect with an Adam Strowger corner and power his header past Reeve. Three minutes later the points were wrapped up. Liddicoat was felled and got to his feet to emphatically ram the spot-kick home. Bragging rights for the visitors were secured in a local derby contested in front of an impressive, and vociferous, crowd of 119.
