PENZANCE JETS 3, NEWQUAY RANGERS 0

Penzance Jets lifted the Cornwall Youth League Under-16s Premiership Cup with a thoroughly dominant and mature display against Newquay Rangers at Porthleven’s Gala Parc on Sunday afternoon.

The fledgling Magpies had their wings clipped by the absence of top scorer Dom Hodges who faces a long recuperation having broken a leg in the recent match away to champions Bodmin Town. They had taken only one point from six over two league fixtures against Newquay, and it was the North Coast side who made the early running. However, once Penzance edged ahead in the 21st minute with a thunderous angled free-kick by Levi Hilling, they never looked back.

The lead was doubled just two minutes later. Newquay’s next attack broke down and Jahmali Prowse and Hilling counter-attacked down the left, dovetailing to present Dom Scoffin with clear sight of goal. The striker’s heavily deflected shot wrong-footed an unlucky keeper.

A minute after the restart, Lewis Stephens almost scored a third with a back post volley from a Hilling cross. With Logan Curnow and Tom Butler as solid as rocks in central defence, Newquay’s predicted onslaught never gathered pace and Penzance continued to enjoy the better chances. Cutting in from the left, Ollie Bond was just off target with a low shot. Hilling saw an effort ruled out for offside, but was not to be denied his second goal for long, pouncing on a defensive error to walk the ball into an empty net and wrap up a well-deserved win.

At the final whistle the players jubilantly celebrated a well-deserved victory with coaches Justin Stephens, Neil Curnow and Bryan Scoffin, as well as family, friends and several Magpies fans. Captain Charlie Palmer, one of four members of the squad to break into the Magpies first team this season, was presented with the Cup. And, for his marauding display down the left flank, Jahmali Prowse collected the Man of the Match Trophy.
