A depleted Penzance concluded a run of four consecutive home games with a narrow defeat to Launceston who belied their lowly position with a deserved victory.
Already deprived of Kam Collins and Rolandos Samnauskas due to suspensions, the Magpies suffered a massive blow when experienced centre-back Mark Vercesi suffered a calf injury in the warm-up and was unable to take any part in proceedings. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the home side started disjointedly and had only a Max Everard shot, comfortably saved by Lewis Slade, to show for their early efforts.
For their part, Launceston looked anything but a bottom-placed side and should have taken a 13th minute lead when James Hamson pounced on a defensive slip but pushed his shot just wide. It was therefore a little against the run of play that the Magpies took the lead with a fine goal. Jordan Daniell, promoted from the bench by Vercesi’s injury, located Darryl Richards with a splendid long pass and the forward clipped a delightful left foot shot just inside’s Slade’s far post.
The lead, however, lasted barely a minute, a corner from the left by the excellent Hamson somehow finding its way through a forest of players and straight into the net. By half-time though, Penzance were back ahead. An flowing move put Jacob Trudgeon clear down the right, and last week’s two goal hero turned provider with an excellent centre enabling Daniell to open his scoring account for the season.
Again, Launceston were quick to reply. Within a minute of the restart, Carl Aldridge intercepted a poor clearance and set up Hamson to nab his second of the afternoon with a fine left foot shot. Penzance had plenty of chances. Liam Andrew flashed a long range drive just wide and Slade saved well from Richards, meeting a Cam McCabe cross on the run.
But the Clarets secured their first away win of the season ten minutes from time. A corner from the left was cleared only as far as Jadon Wood who slammed the ball goalwards and Mark Elvidge stabbed it home from close range to conclude a disappointing afternoon for Penzance.
