Goals from teenagers bookended Penzance’s final pre-season run-out in front of their home fans at Penlee Park, and secured a win over an impressive young Helston team.
The match was just five minutes old when Curtis Smith nodded home a deep Rolandos Samnauskas cross from the left and, running on to a raking cross-field pass by Tyler Tonkin just before the final whistle, Adam Lewis concluded the scoring with a sumptuous finish.
In between these strikes, there was plenty to entertain the spectators with both teams stringing together easy-on-the-eye moves, and the goalkeepers being kept honest. Running onto a slide-rule Charlie Willis pass and finishing with gusto, Samnauskas thought he had Penzance’s second until an offside flag intervened. Willis and Samnauskas were both denied by fine saves, Silas Sullivan was just off target from an Archie Reynolds cross, and Tonkin fizzed a free-kick inches wide. Former Magpie Nathaniel West had the best of Helston’s numerous chances, just missing with a header in the first half, then being thwarted by a smart Will Trenoweth block in the second.
“It was another good work-out against a really well organised, fit, young Helston team,” said Penzance manager Mark Vercesi. “I don’t think we were at our best offensively or in possession of the ball, but I am happy overall to have put another shift in. Defensively we were solid and it was pleasing to keep that clean sheet, and great to have two 17 year olds scoring”.
