PENZANCE 0, MOUSEHOLE 2

A bumper Friday night crowd saw Penzance test themselves against Southern League opposition for the second time in a week, coming up short against near neighbours Mousehole.

The visitors were quickly out of the blocks, Tim Nixon glancing a header inches over from Hayden Turner’s dinked cross. Mikey Flores then did well to keep out a skidding shot from Mousehole captain Jack Calver, but was unable to prevent to the Seagulls from going ahead just before the half hour mark. Jack Symons surged through to set up Turner whose shot was blocked by Flores. The rebound was worked back to Symons who fired home.

Lewis Caspall was off target with a shot as Penzance threatened a quick response before Calver poached Mousehole’s second six minutes before the break, tucking a low shot just inside the far right-hand post from twenty yards out.

As he had against against Falmouth Town four nights earlier, new Magpies boss Mark Vercesi made wholesale changes at the interval. Two of the substitutes linked up in the 59th minute, Darryl Richards delivering a tantalising cross from the left that Jacob Trudgeon was just unable to convert. Then Charlie Willis, one of only four players to survive the half time Cheesy Chop, tenaciously won the ball deep inside Mousehole territory to set up Rolandos Samnauskas whose shot flashed agonisingly wide.

At the other end, Calver curled a free-kick over the bar and Mark Goldsworthy was just off target from a Jude Boyd cross, but there was no second half addition to the scoreline of an entertaining friendly.

“It was another good run-out for the boys where we had some good periods of the game,” reflected Vercesi. “It is always hard against higher league opposition, but that is what pre-season is about - a chance to push yourselves and test yourselves. We are starting to see an identity to this team, and it is one that will work hard and never give up. There is definitely bags of quality that we are going to see more and more of. Although a loss, there is plenty of optimism coming from the team performance.”
