The Ward Williams Cornwall Senior Cup proved unlucky thirteen for Penzance. After twelve games unbeaten, Mark Vercesi’s side slipped out of the competition at the Second Round stage, Bude Town making light of the mammoth school night journey to pull off noteworthy win in the far West.
From the kick-off the visitors looked the livelier of the two outfits, Harrison Swatton seeing his early shot deflected just wide. With target man Charlie Young serving the second game of a ban for his dismissal in the previous home match, the Magpies were lacking peck up front. Set up by Curtis Smith, Charlie Willis saw a shot flicked wide just after the half hour mark. Tyler Tonkin went close from the resultant corner, but Penzance’s best chance of the half came right at its close when Silas Sullivan stretched Ty Rowe to a fine save.
Tonkin went close again, and Smith curled a free-kick just over, as the home side continued to gently tap at the door after the break. From a Willis corner, centre-back Liam Andrew came closest to scoring with an emphatic header that Rowe acrobatically tipped over. At the other end, Will Trenoweth saved well from Lloyd Scaife and substitute Ryan Hodge flashed a shot wide. But, with neither able to make the break-through, an additional half hour was required.
Bernardo Braga, a recent signing from Mousehole, made his Magpies debut as a replacement for Adam Lewis, unluckily injured within minutes of taking the field himself. The disruption perhaps contributed to the home side conceding the all-important goal, buried by Swatton with a sweet low shot that skidded beyond Trenoweth’s reach early in the first half of extra-time. Penzance huffed and puffed for the remaining twenty or so minutes without ever really looking like retrieving the deficit.
“It wasn’t the best from us at all – I feel a bit sorry for the supporters coming in and watching,” admitted Vercesi. “It was a really flat game from us. First half I thought we did OK, but after that there’s not a lot to write home about. Brilliant from Bude though – it’s a tough trip to make on a midweeker, and they came down with numerous changes. They are a well-organised side who know how to play football and defend – it is a great result for them”.
