HOLSWORTHY 0, PENZANCE 0

With the protagonists boasting two of the better defensive records in the league, a goalless stalemate was a predictable outcome on a heavy mid-winter pitch at Upcott Field.

The clearest chance of the entire ninety minutes in fact came barely thirty seconds in. Gavin Carter picked out Max McDonald with a beautifully curled cross, but the unmarked Holsworthy midfielder, arriving at pace, was unable to keep his shot under the cross bar.

The visitors were missing defensive rock Ben Palmer for family reasons, so Silas “Mr Versatile” Sullivan was asked to move inside to partner Tyler Tonkin and Chris Wormington in the heart of the defence with Curtis Smith deployed as left wing-back. The hosts continued to knock at the door - Archie Reynolds bravely blocked a Sam Jago shot and Mikey Flores safely pouched a Jay Thomas effort. At the other end, Charlie Young had a crisp shot on the turn saved by Ryan Chadwick.

Holsworthy were first to threaten after the break. Thomas skewed a shot wide before, just after replacing his captain Jedd Peschke, Dean Hutchings also narrowly missed the target. Penzance’s first change saw James Butler replace Sullivan, but unfortunately the substitute was on the field for just fourteen minutes, a dislocated shoulder forcing him off in the direction of Treliske.

Flores saved further efforts from Callum Martyn and substitute Todd Peschke. The visitors finished strongly, however. Tonkin, on his last appearance before undergoing surgery on his own problematic shoulder, and Jacob Trudgeon fired over on counter-attacks, whilst Sam Young had and injury-time shot charged down. The draw sees Penzance drop one place to fifth in the table behind Wendron following the latter’s victory over Bude.
