Both Young brothers found themselves on the score sheet as Penzance withstood a strong Bude performance to extend their unbeaten run to ten games – six without conceding a goal – and return to third place in the table.
The Magpies had early chances. Chris Wormington directed a header from a Charlie Willis free-kick too close to keeper Ty Rowe, then Curtis Smith skimmed the far post with an angled drive. But Bude enjoyed the better of the opening half. Wormington bravely just beat George Harvey to a Maximus Alvarez-Lopera cross, Mikey Flores saved well from a Rocco Dyer header, then a defensive wall stood firm to charge down a well-struck Alvarez-Lopera free-kick. Just before the turn-around Dyer went close again, set up by excellent work from Alper Eroglu down the right.
Silas Sullivan, captain for the day in the absence of Tyler Tonkin, headed against the cross-bar just after the break, but Bude continued to enjoy territorial advantage for the first quarter-hour of the second-half. Penzance boss Mark Vercesi made a double change shortly after the hour mark. James Butler was given his first run-out since his August injury at Wendron, replacing Sullivan at left-back (Archie Reynolds assumed captaincy for the remainder of the match) whilst Lewis Caspall came on for Smith.
And it was this latter switch that swung the match decisively in Penzance’s favour. Within minutes, Caspall had wriggled clear down the left, cutting the ball back for midfielder Sam Young to smash home his first goal in black and white. “Sam told us on the bus on the way up that he was going to score,” confided Vercesi. “His confidence was great as we haven’t seen him score yet.”
Twenty minutes from time Caspall launched another raid down the left, his pinpoint centre being emphatically smashed home by centre-forward Charlie Young to wrap up the win. “After the break we had a couple of weeks ago, Charlie has reset and come back with three goals in two games,” added his boss. “I am pleased with another clean too. That is six in a row now. That was the target today, another clean sheet and the three points. We haven’t done it in a spectacular fashion or a pretty fashion, but we’ve got the result that we came for.”
Penzance manager, Mark Vercesi speaks to James Wright after the 2-0 win at Bude Town.
